Typology Study
S4C1

In the studio of Typological Study, we majorly focus on understanding the 'Building Type' or the 'Typology' of a certain institution. ‘Building type’ here is a generic form made of sub-components where sub-components have specific relationships with each other. Building types have evolved over years and have consolidated through needs of climate, aspirations, patterns of living etc. A way of life and living is embedded in their configuration. As a diagram, types spatialise relationships between people.

The main ideas of type, pattern and material phenomenologies were enquired in Chikhali, Malusare near Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra. Here, we looked closely at a village settlement and speculate on the various configurations of homestay facilities to promote local tourism. In order to do this we studied one village settlement closely to understand the relationships between the configurations of home and their varied relationships to inhabitation, climate and social acts.

-- Case Study

A house in a small village of Chikali, Mahabaleshwar.

It was observed that each of the houses of the village followed a certain typology or a diagram of configuration of spaces. This configuration of spaces was interpreted differently according to each conditions. There were series of spaces of Aangan > Osri > Padvi > Ghar forming the entire the house, each specific to its material, scale and experience.

Design Intent - The existing built forms of the site, the plinth and the retaining walls were taken over by the vegetation and the first glance of the site, you can not identify that built forms present there. The existing conditions of the site led to the idea of a space which allows vegetation to grow, and the form of the space is shaped by the vegetation. The experience of the site is enhanced through the built form.
