Mechanics of Structures
S3S1

Structures and Building :

A structure is a stable arrangement of elements of a building. It also helps in transferring the load from uppermost level to the ground/earth through its foundation. This can be done with methods using columns, beams and other elements. Here, in a G+7 building, the diagram explains the gradual transfer of load, ie., Terrace Slab > Beams > Column > Foundation > Earth.

Learnings :

The study helped to learn a variety of things about structures and systems. Firstly we learnt about the history of structures and its evolution. Different types of forces applied on a structure due to various loads like live and dead load. How different materials affect the mechanical system of the builtform. This also gave us knowledge about types of foundations, beams, arches, etc. To conclude, it helped to gain a better understanding of a builtform, and how does its structural formwork help it stand.
