Allied Studio
S7S1
-- About the course
The studio, this year, offered an opportunity to engage with an practice, outside school for a month, and work with them and build or generate an understanding about the skill sets required in that particular practice. I worked at an Architectural firm, at Dadar, Mumbai.
-- About the firm
Kaushal Chouhan Architects, is a firm based in Mumbai which undertakes project across Mumbai. They specialize in Residential Projects (including High Rises), Commercial and a few Institutes. It is a small size firm with a team 12-15 members.
It was established 1999 and has completed projects ranging of architectural and interior design services.
The firm takes part in the Designing as well as Liasoning Aspect of the building making.
In a time span of about 40 days, I engaged in a variety of work -
1. 3D Modelling
2. Existing Drawings
3. Carpet Area and Built-Up Area Calculations
4. BMC Approvals Drawings
5. Designing
6. Interior Layouts
7. VR Presentations
--Work
--Existing Drawing
Existing drawings are initial drawings which are made in the earlier stages of the project, is a verification process which ensures compliance with redevelopment norms and safeguards the rights of tenants and developers involved. These are made from base drawings provided by Surveyors which contain information about the manholes present, location of trees, current usage of each space, surroundings.
With the help of these drawings, Existing areas (in this case) of the tenements of the Residential building were calculated.
Built-Up Area and Carpet Area Diagrams, are made for each Flat/ Shop and calculated with the help of triangulation method.
This data is then fed into an Excel, and further calculations on Permissible area, Prorata factors, additional fungible areas are derived according to applicable norms as specified in the DCPR.
I worked on making such drawings for 2 buildings.
--BMC Approval Drawing
The Approval process involves several stages to ensure compliance with building regulations, safety standards, and environmental norms. For example, documents and Certificates like
- NOCs and Clearances
- IOD (Intimation of Disapproval)
- CFO (Chief Fire Officer)
- CC (Commencement Certificates)and OC
These provide information about what area is Counted in F.S.I., location of the Substation, D.G. Sets, Driveways, Tank Layouts along with many other structural information.
These are color coded, and in a format as prescribed.
All of this is designed, keeping in mind the provisions, minimum requirements of spaces, accessibility, fire norms and various other factors as mentioned in the DCPR.
These drawings also include data about Area Diagrams similar to those made for the Existing Structure.
Here, Addition method and Deduction methods of calculating Built up areas are used depending on the type of area is being calculated affected by factors like fungible area, permissible area.
--Designing Spaces
I worked on designing terrace and Amenity floors of 2 Residential Buildings
A detailed planning of the floors was done on an overall approved plan of the respective floor, which provided information on what areas on that floor can be enclosed/ covered or not. Further planning was done based on that along with client requirements, concept of the design.
--3D Modelling
Models made in SketchUp, were used to design, visualize and experiment elevational features for a Residential Building.
Facade Design options with Horizontal and Vertical Fins were made.
These were also utilised to generate views and renders.
These were then taken in a VR software to experience the space.
I was introduced to a new software regarding VR and learnt basics about it.
